In floating between networks and the coverage of the strikes the other night, I was watching MSNBC to see Brian Williams gush about delivering the Pentagon’s propaganda video feed. At that moment Arwa Damon was providing some actual analysis of the strikes. Williams cut her off because we all just HAD TO WATCH missiles shooting from Navy ships.
We were cut off from informative and relevant to spectacle. The latter superseded the former so much that Damon just had to be cut off. I was so struck at that moment by how complicit our media is in promoting militarism in our society.
This is not a sports match! This is not a board game! This is not a movie! People die when we drop bombs. That is not “beautiful”. It may be warranted, just, and necessary at times. But it is not beautiful.
The cruise missiles struck, and many in the mainstream media fawned. “I think Donald Trump became president of the United States last night,” declared Fareed Zakaria on CNN, after firing of 59 missiles at a Syrian military airfield late Thursday night.
